The NBA is back and the defending champions and reigning MVP in the Golden State Warriors and Steph Curry, respectively, are cooking with gas. The Warriors started the season 1-0 with a 111-95 win over Anthony Davis and the upstart Pelicans. Steph Curry did not take long to regain his MVP form, finishing with 40 points and 7 assists.
One of my favorite plays (video below) that Curry made in this game was just about 8 minutes into his red-hot first quarter. He took advantage of Pelicans guard Ish Smith being a touch late on his closeout and lunging to get in position to guard the Warriors ball screen. Curry gives a slight jab as if he’s going to use the ball screen, takes advantage of Smith’s momentum and rejects Draymond Green’s screen towards the basket. Curry then breaks off a magnificent step back to create space between himself and the almost-7-feet-tall Anthony Davis, before swishing a three-pointer.
