Head Men's Basketball Coach – Pratt Cannoneers
In the interest of full disclosure, for those who have not been reading this site for a few months, I thought Kristaps Porzingas was a TERRIBLE pick by the New York Knicks in this last draft.
But it is possible that Porzingis doesn’t actually suck?
That looked pretty good right!?!?
I’m still not completely sold on Porzingis, but that was definitely impressive, jumping the passing lane, spinning around Paul Millsap in transition and throwing down a hammer of a dunk against the Hawks last night. There’s no denying how impressively the young man moves for a 7’1″ player. He’s not stiff, he can definitely shoot the ball and has actually shown a surprising willingness to throw his body around in the post.
I just don’t think it’s quite there yet. He’s currently 7-21 from the field over two games and watching it back, I feel like he’s missing shots that should be automatic. Certainly being third on the team in scoring (26 points over two games, trailing Carmelo Anthony and Derrick Williams) is a credit to his ability to get to the foul line (14 attempts, most on the team, making 11 of them). He has also rebounded fairly well, pulling down 13, tied for second best on the Knicks. Porzingis is not a great passer though, contributing just a single assist so far this season against six turnovers.
I understand that statistics cannot purely tell the story of a player and his success, but my belief based on the eye test, as biased as I may be, is that Porzingis is just missing too much right now. I certainly hope he ends up working out and becoming a star for my favorite team, the Knicks. Plus, he’s still a rookie and I think it would only be fair for me to wait a bit of time before totally writing him off.
